Below PDX Mix-Tape #1
Various Portland Area Artists
CASSETTE 54 min
BELOWPDX
028 $7

Fifteen of my favorite Portland area sound wranglers on 12 tracks. A pudgy dollop of diversity, my friends are so talented and I wanna show Ôem off. We're talking harsh noise, blissful sentiment, weirdo pop, tape collage and a little bit in between the sheets discomfort. I've listened to this so many times and I still haven't gotten sick of it.

The Tenses
(Rick/Jackie of Smegma, this is the premiere recording of thier new project.)
Frozen Body
(worth the price just for this track!)
Ghost to Falco
(atypical style for this clever songwriter consisting of musical, beautiful, and whimsical tape collage from field recordings in Europe)
Organizer
(Dan Rizer, also of Budweiser Sprite kicking out some serious summer-hate)
Inca Ore
(Eva unfortunately moved back to Oakland, but PDX is always in her heart)
The Sunken
(How can we not have the Kelso boys over for the party?!)
Loyal Mantooth
(I don't know what planet these bad-boys are from, wonderfully bizarre hip-hop flavored dark synth pop, served ice cold)
Redglaer
(Bob doesn't really live anywhere, but Portland is where we claim him)
Fouled Snow
(Pat Maherr, also of Sisprum Vish, DJ Yo-Yo Dieting, Shitty Vibe Smasher, and that one bike ensemble he plays in)
Dragging an Ox Through Water
(real honest to goodness perfect pop)
Badlands
(Suzette of Haunted Castle, recent Portland transplant from Detroit)
Householed
(recent transplant from Denver, born in the basement with a four-track)

Special offer: If you prefer the ease of listening to mp3s on your ipods, buy this tape and make a note that you'd like a digital version as well and I'll send you a zip folder with the audio as one long high quality (320) mp3. You'll still get the tape as it's the way this audio is meant to be heard.

Boss of Goth

This is the first album I wish to be remembered by. Recorded through a bleak year of my life, 2006, Boss of Goth is an album of power-mourning, demon-fighting and vengeance-fucking. Trapped inside despair over the death of true love, childhood, and joy, I have always clung voraciously to a promise of a better tomorrow. I finished this album in March of 2007 and held on to it until now to make sure I would still love it enough to make 500 of them.

Boss of Goth includes industrial punk and pop style songs with occasional fleeting dance beats and bursts of harsh noise. Vocals are the central focus, creating sweet pop ballads and lurking creep-stalker punk melt-downs. A variety of microphone processing accompanying sequencers, drum machines, and tons and tons of manipulated cassette tapes. Twisted collage journeys and quick punches to the throat. A fitting comparison perhaps: To Live and Shave in LA meets Nine Inch Nails, with the spirits of Edward Ka-Spel, Suckdog, and bedroom four track. Includes 6 songs that have appeared regularly in live performances. Oh yeah, and I play piano on the last track.

Album includes two hidden bonus tracks. The first a live performance caught at the end of my "temper tantrum approach" to harsh noise performance. The second is Dragging an Ox Through Water (aka Brian Mumford) singing a cover of my song "Save Life's Golden Receipt in Case Refund Needed." Both were recorded at Someday Lounge by Ryan Olson.

CD comes with a 12 page booklet with lyrics. Cover art by Brian Mumford. .

Mostly micro-cassette recorder (circuit-altered and otherwise) processed samples journey almost linear down waterslides of churning meows, alternating creeping and whipping against ribbed oscillations. When the kittens are at play, the orchestras can often fill with delay.. You won’t find much delay and reverb here. You will have a numbing sensation in your cheek from listening to this. Your head will feel all fuzzy until your brain drains. Kitty Midwife is also in Animal Writes and she is hard at work on a full-length recording for Below PDX. .

Cocolase processing Science-Fiction inspired playful keyboard emissions. Constantly churning and shifting, perfect for short attention spans and or for your pet monkey’s walkman on his first trip to the moon. A collaboration of Rex Marshall's project "Mattress" and James Squeaky aka "Argumentix."

There are only a few lonely/mixed up/slightly bent survivors who remember that time. They speak in poems; disconnect and strange. They don't talk about bombs or blitz, they talk about the beginning of the end and the end of the end. There is a guy who lives under the Big Hill, he says, "We got down to the finale of the end, the last chorus for the short dance that kept echoing down the hall. Even when the place was on fire, fireworks smiling all over the place and sparks like tears raining on the wood shingles, we clapped.

This really wonderful band called Point Line Plane let me put out their debut album and its so fantastically brillant. Two piece (drum and keyboards) with spazzy screamy vocals. Very solid. Beautiful artwork by E*Rock. Point Line Plane is now on Skin Graft Records. Drummer Nate Carson plays with SUNN0))) sometimes and Keyboards/vocals Josh Blanchard is also in Plants now and hosts the monthly Church of Psychedelia.

Cults destroy families and brains for the profit of their infallible leaders. Human slaves, rise up and destroy your masters! Live free or opt out completely. Manipulation by criminals intent on genocide for their own praise.

It just so happens that Below PDX recording artists, Soup Purse and Argumentix both wrote long pieces denouncing their most despised cult leaders. Both fairly harsh pieces with vocals. Cocolase, feedback, tape manipulation, synth, vocals, and beats make this quite a journey. Collected together here for Volume One of the True Guru Electronics series. Below PDX doesn't necessarily intent do release volume two so feel free to keep the name going to expose these jerks.

We first found these two soldiers experimenting with extreme art punk hardcore band Alarmist. These days find the two bare souls strutting their solo projects, but this collaboration doesn’t sound too much like either while retaining some familiar elements (argumentix vocals/sample/loops and ghosttofalco guitar, synth, vocals). There’s real bells, there’s a song composed, practiced and recorded over 2 hours and the rest is improvised. James Squeaky (ARG) and Eric Crespo (GTF) are very close friends and this CD is a great exploration of the love and intimacy that they share, totally without boundaries of self-consciousness.

Mattress may bring images of discarded furniture, caked and reeking of dead skin and matted clumps of hair. From the lip-chapping desert air, a deep bold voice collides against ancient rock walls, stabbing icicles in the rubbery flesh of cacti while oozing sinister intentions across lizard flesh. Mattress is what Suicide's first album would have sounded as a blues band: confrontational, sinister and somehow still dancy. Like more recent era Nick Cave low dark vocals meets old era Smog, pop with a lonely bedroom recorded desperation. Rex Marshall is a one-man rhythm ace of prison water torture repetitive beats and slippery casio keyboard progressions.
